Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to teach and learn on Fatiyyah Academy, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, a switch, large text or high contrast. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA on the website and the Android and iOS apps, in English, Urdu and Arabic, in light and dark mode.
What we do
- We test every change automatically for common accessibility problems on the web and in the iOS app, and by hand with screen readers and the keyboard before each release.
- Teachers can mark words on the mushaf with the keyboard: the arrow keys move between words in reading order, and Enter opens the marking options.
- Text follows your device's text size in the apps, and every text colour meets the contrast ratio WCAG asks for.
- Arabic and Urdu read right to left throughout.
Known limitations
- Mushaf pages use the King Fahd Complex page fonts, which draw each word as an image-like glyph. Screen readers announce a page by its surah and page number and, when marking, each word by its ayah and position, but cannot yet read the Arabic aloud word by word. We are working on adding the Uthmani text for screen readers.
- Words on a phone-sized mushaf are small because they follow the printed page. In the apps you can zoom the page with two fingers.
Tell us about a problem
If something does not work for you, email accessibility@fatiyyah.academy with the page or screen and what happened. We reply within five working days and will offer another way to do what you need while we fix it.
